The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility will host a customer input open house to discuss the construction of a new Material Recycling Facility (MRF) building.
Attendees can arrive any time between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., Oct. 7, at the Activities and Recreation Center, 1701 West Ash St. This is a "come and go" event with no formal presentation. At this event, the public will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage with City staff and submit comments.
An EF-1 tornado touched down on April 20 in north Columbia near the City's landfill property, destroying the MRF, where City employees would sort recyclable material for baling and sale. After making necessary repairs to the sorting and baling equipment, the Solid Waste Utility plans to proceed with constructing a new building to replace the damaged structure.
In the meantime, the City is looking to construct a temporary building that will protect the equipment, employees and recyclable materials from the weather.
