Carrada Sanchez sizzles, leads Seawolves past Red Leafs in Burnaby

Burnaby, British Columbia (Jan. 15) - Sophomore guard Kimberly Carrada Sanchez scored 20 points on red-hot shooting and senior Taylor Searcey notched 15 points and seven rebounds Thursday to lead UAA to a 79-72 women's basketball victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (11-4, 3-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 points and six rebounds from sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison and a game-high 12 rebounds from junior center Lillee Duffin as they won for the 13th time in the last 14 series meetings. Guards Elaina Mack and Faith Mersburgh added 10 points apiece.

The Red Leafs (7-11, 2-5) were led by 23 points from guard Bree Neufeld and a big game from Rachel Loukes (13 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists), but the hosts were outrebounded 54-39.

"We had a tough seven minutes out of the gate, but stuck to our game plan and executed well on both ends of the floor for the remainder of the game, and it paid off with a great road win," said UAA head coach Matt Thune. "Kim was feeling it offensively, and while Elaina didn't have her highest-scoring game, she did so many other things to contribute. It was also a great night for our entire bench, with Taylor feeling more comfortable and getting her legs back after a long layoff from game action."

Looking for their first GNAC road win under Thune, the Seawolves fell behind 15-5 before Harrison got the comeback started with a three-pointer. Mersburgh nabbed a steal and scored four points to help UAA tie it with a 10-point run, but the Red Leafs responded with another surge, going up 26-17 with six minutes left in the half.

Searcey got the Seawolves kick-started again as the former Valdosta State standout made two free throws and converted off her own offensive rebound. She grabbed a defensive board that led to a Harrison layup and UAA's first lead, 28-26, and the Seawolves took a 37-36 lead at the break.

Harrison scored four straight points to start the second half, helping UAA retain the lead the rest of the way. Freshman guard Mylee Anderson dished one of her team-high four assists to Harrison and followed with a layup to make it 48-39, and Carrada nailed a trey for a 61-51 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Red Leafs cut it to a six- or seven-point game four times in the final nine minutes, but Anderson, Carrada Sanchez, Mack and Searcey provided answer baskets to protect the advantage.

A transfer from Northwest University, Carrada Sanchez notched her second-most points as a Seawolf and her most in a GNAC game on 7-of-9 shooting (4-6 3FG).

Playing in just her fourth game as a Seawolf, Searcey shot 5 of 9 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the foul stripe, along with two assists, a steal and three blocks. Mack had five rebounds, three assists and no turnovers, while Mersburgh shot 2 of 4 from the field, 5 of 6 on free throws and had two assists with no turnovers.

The Seawolves earned an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass and their bench outscored its Red Leafs counterparts 27-13, getting a clutch two points and three rebounds from forward Alba Sanz as well.

UAA concludes its road trip Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip against Western Washington (13-5, 5-2) in Bellingham. Find live links at GoSeawolves.com.
