MENG STATEMENT FOLLOWING ANTISEMITIC ATTACK AT TEMPLE ISRAEL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) released the following statement following yesterday's antisemitic terrorist attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan:
"As millions of Jewish people around the United States and the world gather for Shabbat, I join them in prayer for peace and safety.
Yesterday's attempted attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, was more than an antisemitic act of terror. It was an attack on Jewish life in America and all people of faith.
Reports indicate the suspect was armed with a rifle and his car contained mortars and potentially other explosives. Had it not been for the bravery of one security guard, hundreds of children could have been killed.
My office has been in touch with NYPD to make sure all proper security measures are in place for our city. As the top Democrat on the House appropriations subcommittee that funds federal law enforcement, public safety is my top priority, and I will work with anyone to advance it. I have requested a briefing with the FBI to ensure our law enforcement agencies are responding appropriately in this heightened threat environment.
At this critical moment, members of both parties must come together to increase funding for the lifesaving Nonprofit Security Grant Program, pass my bipartisan Pray Safe Act of 2025 to cut red tape and make it easier for communities to access security resources they need, and take down the temperature in our country. Hate cannot be a partisan issue. Members of both parties have a duty to call out antisemitism whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head.
My office stands ready to support any who require assistance."
