City of Edinburg to Host Groundbreaking for Phase II of Freddy Gonzalez Hike and Bike Trail

Groundbreaking ceremony to be held Thursday, Feb. 5

Edinburg, TX - As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting health, wellness, and active lifestyles, the City will soon begin construction on a 10-foot-wide hike-and-bike trail along Freddy Gonzalez Drive, connecting to Raul Longoria Road and enhancing outdoor connectivity between Edinburg and neighboring communities. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Freddy Gonzalez Hike and Bike Trail Project is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 1910 E. Freddy Gonzalez Drive.

The trail will connect South Park, located behind the Edinburg Parks and Recreation facility, to Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium and feature signalized pedestrian crossings. The project, made possible through a collaboration with the RGVMPO via a Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) grant, will be built on the future underground drainage canal along the roadway. The estimated construction cost is $1.1 million, of which $862,745 will come from state and federal funds.

The 1.6-mile trail will provide east-west pedestrian access, increasing walkability to city parks and schools in the area, and will connect to trails constructed in recent years creating the bridge between the City of Edinburg and the City of McAllen. Construction will begin in February and is expected to be completed by late Fall of 2026.

Media members and the community are encouraged to attend the event to learn more about the hike-and-bike trail. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the City of Edinburg's Facebook page and Spectrum Channel 1300.
