UNESCO steps up support for 10 countries affected by emergencies

In Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, funds will be allocated to resuming school continuity, conducting damage assessments, evaluating the quality of water in wells, and establishing fact-checking platforms.

In Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Honduras, damage assessments to cultural sites and educational institutions will be conducted, and emergency stabilization measures implemented, in order to prevent further loss of heritage.

In Nigeria, psychosocial support will be provided to kidnapped teachers and students after their release, and capacity-building will be provided to educators in recognizing signals of vulnerability among their students.

In Sudan, a number of initiatives related to education will be implemented, ranging from psychosocial support to displaced communities, to access to higher education, to technical and vocational education and training.

In Madagascar, support to freedom of expression, continuity of education and participation of youth in public life will be provided.

Since 2015, UNESCO has expanded its emergency response strategy, covering interventions related to preparedness, response, and long-term recovery, ensuring that culture, education, and science remain central to supporting the resilience of communities.
