Sterling Heights Public Library Enhances Dramatic Play Area with Early Literacy Grant

The Sterling Heights Public Library has transformed its children's dramatic play area thanks to a $2,000 Early Literacy Grant awarded by the Suburban Library Cooperative. This investment allows the library to provide young learners with new opportunities for imaginative play, creativity, and language development.

Prior to this upgrade, the play area featured only a small wooden stall and a limited assortment of repurposed play items. With grant funding, the library has completely redesigned the space, adding high-quality furniture and props designed to enrich children's play experiences. The area now includes a kitchen, a miniature diner, a grocery stand, and even an outdoor playhouse located in the Children's Garden.

To keep the space fresh and engaging, the library also purchased multiple themed dramatic play kits that rotate on a monthly basis. Children can now explore real-world scenarios through dentist, veterinarian, doctor, camping, and magic kits, as well as themed sets like a sandwich shop, sushi shop, and tool kits. A light table has also been added, giving children the chance to experiment with x-ray exploration and building activities.

"Dramatic play is more than just fun-it is a vital tool for early literacy," said Sterling Heights Library Director Tammy Turgeon. "Through role-playing and storytelling, children practice language skills, expand their vocabulary, and build important social connections. We are thrilled to offer a space that inspires creativity while supporting literacy growth."

The redesigned dramatic play area ensures that activities are inclusive, culturally relevant, and accessible to families throughout Sterling Heights. By combining imaginative play with educational resources, the library continues to support children's lifelong learning journey.
