WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) introduced legislation to rename the Sussex County VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Newton the "Anthony J. 'Tony' Gallopo Veterans Affairs Clinic." Tony Gallopo was a U.S. Navy veteran who served as Vice Commander of the New Jersey Department of the American Legion and Commander of American Legion Post 86 in Newton. He played an instrumental role in the opening of the Newton clinic in 2017. Before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he was active in the Saddle Brook Fire Department. Following his military service, Tony worked as a corrections officer and remained an active member of the Paramus Elks. U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and Air Force veteran Herb Conaway (NJ-3) led the entire New Jersey Delegation in introducing companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
"New Jerseyans across our state have benefited from the lifelong service and heroism of Tony Gallopo," said Senator Booker. "Tony continued to serve our country long after his military service ended by standing up for others and advocating for the care that our veterans deserve. He has been a valued partner to my office on issues impacting our veterans, and he was one of the leaders I had the honor of working with as we successfully fought to open a brand new VA Clinic in Sussex County. Tony's leadership with the American Legion made a lasting difference for veterans not only in Sussex County but across New Jersey. This legislation will ensure that his legacy of service and dedication to his fellow veterans continues to be honored."
"Mr. Gallopo was a patriot who served his country in the Navy before fighting tirelessly for veterans in Sussex and Warren Counties until his last days," said Senator Kim. "It is because of Tony's commitment and advocacy that veterans in New Jersey's northern counties now have this CBOC to receive the care they need - it is an honor to be able to work alongside Senator Booker to dedicate the Newton clinic in Tony's name. May his service and fight never be forgotten."
