Fitbit's personal health coach in public preview is here

Earlier this summer, we shared our vision for an AI-powered personal health coach built with Gemini. It's a fitness trainer, a sleep coach and a health and wellness advisor - all working together to help you be your best. Starting tomorrow and over the next week, we're rolling out a Public Preview for eligible Android Fitbit Premium users in the U.S. first and expanding to iOS users soon.

Building this health coach takes time, rigor and input to make sure it works well for everyone, which is why we're starting with a preview and asking for your feedback. This is a brand new experience, so initially, there will be some gaps, but you'll see regular improvements and communication from us when we add, change or improve features and capabilities. You can also check out the community forum to learn when we add new features and functionality.

Your health and wellness are important, so we've built our coach responsibly: It's secure, personalized, grounded in science - and we think it will truly help people.

What to expect

The preview coach experience begins with a 5-10 minute conversation (via text or your keyboard microphone) with your coach to understand your motivations and goals. The more you share up front, the better your coach can fine-tune your plans. Don't worry - you can always skip this and come back to it.

The main features of your personal health coach in the preview version are:

Today (light mode): Look here for timely updates and insights during key moments - like when you wake up, after a workout and before bed.

Today (dark mode): Look here for timely updates and insights during key moments - like when you wake up, after a workout and before bed.

Fitness: Follow your weekly progress, see your personalized plan and track all your core metrics, including cardio load (now weekly).

Sleep: Get insights on your quality, consistency and progress using our most accurate tracking yet.

Health: Understand your vitals and other key metrics - like HRV or weight - in this one-stop hub.

There's also the ability to access your "always-on" coach and ask any questions with the "Ask Coach" button.

Get the most out of your coach

By no means is this a comprehensive list of what the personal health coach can do. In fact, we're hoping you discover new things it's capable of. But, to get you started, here are some of our favorite ways to interact with the coach:

Get personalized fitness coaching

Your coach can be your fitness trainer and create personalized plans and routines.

  • Review and adjust your plan: If you've set up a fitness plan, you'll get a notification each week with your recommendations. View your multi-week plan and even discuss it with your coach for more details or to make changes.
  • Set goals and check progress: Click on your fitness goal, or simply say, "Set a new goal for me to run a 10k in three months." Not sure what to target? Try: "I'd like to start running but am not sure how far or long to run. What are some good goals for me?" and see how you're progressing toward these over time.
  • Create workouts on the fly and around constraints: Try: "Create a 30-minute upper body workout I can do in my hotel room." Your workout will be personalized based on your goals, readiness and recent activity. It can also take into account what equipment you have available and suggest workouts for your setup. Try: "I'd like some workouts that just use my 20lb dumbbells and exercise bands."
  • Adjust your schedule: Your coach can adapt your plan to match your current needs, even when life happens, like an injury or a late day at work. Try: "My knee is bugging me, can you adjust my plan?"
  • Get advice: Your coach can also help with education. Ask: "What exercises are best for building biceps?" or "What's the difference between a deadlift, RDL and split squats?"
  • Remember your preferences: Give your coach some feedback about your last workout and incorporate it into future ones. Try: "I liked the strength workout you recommended, can we make it part of my weekly routine and step it up?"

Improve your sleep

Your coach can help connect dots to improve your sleep.

  • Get a detailed sleep analysis: Ask: "Why did I wake up feeling tired today?" to get an analysis of what might have impacted your sleep. Been traveling? Let your coach know and ask for tips to get back on track.
  • Receive personalized recommendations: For actionable advice, try: "What can I do to get more deep sleep?" or "Can you suggest a wind-down routine for me?"
  • Understand patterns and trends: You can also ask your coach, "Find patterns in my sleep and give me a summary of my sleep quality this past week." It can even provide visualizations to explain important trends over time.
  • See how you stack up: Ask: "How is my sleep quality compared to others like me?" Your coach will compare your data against others in your demographic group, providing valuable context.
  • Find important connections: To uncover relationships in your data, ask: "How is my cardio load impacting my sleep quality?" Your coach will analyze the data to identify and explain important connections.

Understand your health

Your coach is also your go-to resource for health and wellness questions.

  • Get more out of your doctor's visits: Brainstorm with your coach, "I have my annual check-up, what are some good questions to ask my doctor?"
  • Understand nutrition options: For example, learn about the benefits of protein by asking, "How much protein should I be eating?" or "Should I take creatine?"
  • Navigate life stages and women's health: Ask your coach about "What are the most common symptoms of menopause? How can I manage them?"
  • Understand more about health conditions: Curious about conditions like prediabetes? Just ask: "What is pre-diabetes and what are the warning signs?"
  • Dive into your data: Want to see the specifics? Ask: "What do resting heart rate and HRV mean?" and "How are mine trending this year?" to show both charts and takeaways.
  • Get a robust snapshot of your health history: Ask your coach, " summarize what you know about me" to get a comprehensive overview of what it's learned about your health.

We can't wait for you to try it and give us feedback, as we continue our journey to empower everyone to live a longer, healthier life.
