Kaine Statement on Trump's New Taxes on Everyday Goods

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on everyday goods from 86 countries under Section 301:

"President Trump promised to lower costs, but he's done everything but that. In addition to his budget-busting war in Iran, he imposed tariffs that have raised costs across the board for American families and businesses. Although the Supreme Court struck down many of his tariffs, President Trump refuses to take the off-ramp. These latest tariffs are another broad-based abuse of a law intended for targeted use and show how he will use any tool at his disposal to impose taxes on Americans. Despite the Trump-Vance Administration's claims that tariffs will boost domestic manufacturing and protect American workers and businesses, they have not done so, instead further fueling inflation. Add these recent taxes to the Trump-Vance Administration's long list of broken promises."

Kaine has been outspoken against President Trump's new taxes on Americans. Kaine led four successful bipartisan pieces of legislation-one in April 2025 and three in October 2025-to passage in the Senate to nullify Trump's global tariffs and levies on Canada and Brazil. Earlier this year, Kaine and Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) introduced the Reclaim Trade Powers Act to repeal Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974.
