Southeast Missouri State University's social work students spent part of their Fall Break giving back to the Cape Girardeau community, volunteering at Project Hope to help connect more than 400 individuals and families with free services and community resources.
Hosted annually by Cape Community Partnership, Project Hope brings together lead agencies and volunteers to provide access to services such as medical, dental and vision care, food boxes, pet care supplies and haircuts.
SEMO students helped vendors set up, welcomed participants, shared information, guided visitors, staffed agency tables, served lunch and collected exit surveys.
"It's an amazing opportunity for social work students because the material they're learning in class comes alive at Project Hope," said Dr. Dana Branson, assistant professor of social work at SEMO. "They get to see and be part of the work they're learning about, which gets them excited about being social workers."
SEMO's participating students were Stefani Anders of Perryville, Mo,. Kayte Black of Essex, Mo., Hannah Colabianchi of Dittmer, Mo., Shell Jones-Grigsby of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Ciana Jackson of Ballwin, Mo., Amanda Kimmich of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Kaylee Lawrence of Jackson, Mo., Lamiyah Mackins of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Claire Shipman of Jackson, Mo.
