Wave of Change in Midterm Results Brings Lifeline to Wildlife

The midterm election results brought a dramatic shift in the majority control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and in five gubernatorial elections, sparking hope for the defense and protection of America's wildlife and wild places. Defenders of Wildlife president and CEO Andrew Bowman issued the following statement lauding the power shift in D.C.:

"Last night, Americans voted decisively for change, delivering a historic midterm election that will reshape the political landscape in Washington and across the country. Democrats have won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, ushering in a new era and a much-needed check on the administration's agenda.

"For those of us working to protect America's wildlife and wild places, this is a moment of renewed hope and possibility.

"Over the past two years, we have faced extraordinary challenges, including relentless efforts to weaken the Endangered Species Act, roll back protections for public lands and undermine decades of conservation progress.

"A new Congress offers opportunities to defend bedrock environmental laws, strengthen congressional oversight and advance conservation priorities that have faced significant political headwinds. It also creates new possibilities for bipartisan cooperation around something we know transcends political divisions: America's shared commitment to wildlife and our natural heritage.

"Today, as we celebrate and look to the future with renewed energy and determination, Defenders of Wildlife is proud to continue standing up for what is right, partnering with states and federal agencies and working within our communities to ensure people and wildlife can thrive."
