From Monday, July 6, to Friday, July 10, 2026, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials and international experts visited Japan to observe the current status of the decommissioning of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)'s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), as well as the reconstruction of the surrounding areas.

Four IAEA officials including Olena Mykolaichuk, Director of the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology, and four international experts from Indonesia, Spain, the UK, and the U.S., visited Japan with the aim of gaining an up-to-date understanding of the decommissioning work at TEPCO's FDNPS and the progress of reconstruction in the surrounding areas.

The following is a summary of the visit by the IAEA officials and international experts.

    1. Efforts to reduce risk at the decommissioning of TEPCO's FDNPS are advancing, and the process is moving forward safely and steadily; and
    2. The visit served as a meaningful opportunity to deepen understanding of the progress being made in the reconstruction of surrounding areas, such as efforts toward lifting evacuation orders in the difficult-to-return zone, the revitalization of businesses and livelihoods, and the creation of new industries in parallel with the progress of decommissioning work, and to confirm that the Government of Japan is advancing initiatives based on the principle of coexistence of reconstruction and decommissioning.

The Government of Japan will continue to cooperate with the IAEA and provide information with a high level of transparency, both domestically and internationally, regarding the progress of efforts toward the safe and steady decommissioning of TEPCO's FDNPS and the reconstruction of Fukushima.
