The leaders emphasise the need to reduce irregular migration flows, combat people smuggling more effectively, increase returns of persons without the right to reside in the European Union and strengthen cooperation with third countries. They stress that all measures must be fully consistent with European Union law and international conventions.
In the letter, the signatories call for the swift implementation of the agreed solutions and the achievement of concrete results that will contribute to security, stability and the preservation of social cohesion in Europe.
Upon signing the letter, Prime Minister Janez Janša wrote:
"Slovenia has finally joined the 18 EU Member States calling for a fundamental change in immigration policy, also in practice. The end is approaching for social tourism, overlooked people smuggling and the importation of voters for the European left."
