Johnson declares March 2026 as Whole Child Month

SPRINGFIELD - To highlight the importance of supporting students beyond academics, State Senator Adriane Johnson championed the effort to declare March 2026 as Illinois Whole Child Month.

"Designating Whole Child Month is about recognizing that student success extends far beyond the classroom," said Johnson (D-Buffalo Grove). "We must ensure every child has the resources, support and environment they need to grow, thrive and succeed."

The initiative promotes a "whole child" approach to education - one that prioritizes academic achievement alongside students' physical health, emotional well-being and overall development.

Senate Resolution 611 encourages families, educators and community members to take part by promoting key principles of the whole child model: supporting healthy lifestyles, maintaining safe learning environments, fostering student engagement, providing individualized support from trusted adults and challenging students to think critically and prepare for future careers.

The resolution comes as Illinois continues working to strengthen student outcomes. While the state's high school graduation rate is 87%, only 64% of graduates enroll in college within a year. Advocates say a more comprehensive approach to education can help close that gap and better equip students for long-term success.

"A whole child approach ensures students are not only learning, but also feeling safe, supported and empowered," Johnson said. "This effort is a call to action to invest in our children in a more meaningful, lasting way."

Senate Resolution 611 was adopted Thursday.
