For Immediate Release
July 27, 2026
We know many are hurting right now. Our immediate concern is the well-being of the community. This is a moment for introspection, confronting hard truths, making change, and finding a way to heal.
The City of Madison is working with elected officials, neighborhood and community leaders, community organizations, and local businesses in the Williamson St./Baldwin St. area. Currently, the City is focused on addressing public safety, assessing impacts to residents and businesses near Williamson and Baldwin streets, and evaluating needs and ways to meet them. In order to reach a long-term resolution, many stakeholders need to be brought to the table, and that work is actively taking place.
Local elected officials have already reached out directly to Marquette neighborhood residents, and other city officials plan to do so in the hours and days ahead. We encourage people to connect with their neighborhood and business associations, as well as with their alder and county supervisor so we can properly assess and respond to urgent needs in a coordinated way.
Additionally, there is a lot of misinformation circulating on social media. Please be mindful of spreading or sharing information that isn't from reliable sources.
We plan to provide updates to the public as needed. We appreciate the community's patience as we navigate many complexities. Our community deserves full transparency and accountability, and we have much work to do in the coming days. We hope the entire Madison community will be safe, take care of each other, extend each other grace, and help us all live up to our shared values. The only way forward is together.
