Jefferson City, Mo - On December 23, 2025, the Circuit Court of Cole County, Missouri placed Cornerstone National Insurance Company ("Cornerstone") into receivership. The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance ("DCI") Director, Angela L. Nelson, has been named receiver of Cornerstone, which allows the Director, as receiver, to take over operations of the company. The Court placed Cornerstone into (1) rehabilitation effective January 1, 2026 to February 28, 2026, and (2) liquidation effective March 1, 2026. All Cornerstone policies will terminate by no later than March 31, 2026.
Cornerstone is a Missouri-domiciled property and casualty insurance company that sells homeowners, auto, and liability insurance policies in various states. It is licensed in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
Cornerstone is a relatively small insurance company. As of September 30, 2025, Cornerstone had only 2,706 in-force insurance policies, primarily in Oklahoma and Illinois. There are no active policies in Missouri.
Prior to being placed into receivership, Cornerstone experienced persistent and substantial losses which caused a reduction in its assets. Cornerstone's surplus dropped from $1,142,458 as of December 31, 2024, to ($378,131) as of September 30, 2025. DCI placed Cornerstone under an Order of Administrative Supervision effective July 9, 2024. Insurance regulators in at least seven other states have taken recent action to prevent Cornerstone from writing insurance policies in their respective states.
Receivership is a judicial process where a Court appoints a receiver to take possession of the insurer's assets and administer them under the Court's supervision. Cornerstone's liquidation will allow the receiver to marshal the assets and pay creditors according to a statutory plan upon Court approval.
Cornerstone's existing policies will remain in place until March 1, 2026, unless they otherwise expire by their terms or are cancelled. To maintain coverage until then, policyholders must continue to pay premiums. However, active policies as of March 1, 2026, will terminate no later than March 31, 2026. Policyholders and agents are strongly encouraged to begin transitioning coverage to another carrier accordingly.
