Power restored in Pukalani, Maui following shutoff Hazardous conditions preventing storm restoration in West Maui

HONOLULU, Sept. 27, 2026 - Hawaiian Electric is continuing its Public Safety Power Shutoff watch as a wind advisory remains in effect until tomorrow morning. Earlier this afternoon, due to the immediate threat of wildfires from high winds and dry conditions, Hawaiian Electric initiated its PSPS program and proactively shut off power in Pukalani, Maui. Power was restored around 4:30 p.m. as risk conditions lessened.

As of 7 p.m., about 10,000 customers remain without power in West Maui. West Maui customers who are currently without power should still prepare for an overnight outage with an estimated restoration time of noon tomorrow, Sept. 28. These outages were not due to a PSPS. Power cannot be restored until helicopters can fly safely in the ridge area above the Papalaua Wayside Park to complete damage assessments of the transmission lines. This work is scheduled to take place at first light tomorrow morning as soon as aerial flights in the area are approved. Hawaiian Electric crews are completing inspections and making repairs in other areas of West Maui where work can be performed safely. Wildfire prevention efforts require transmission lines to be thoroughly inspected before power can be safely restored.

In addition, about 400 customers are without power in Haiku and Upcountry. Power to most of these customers is estimated to be restored later this evening.

There are no significant outages on Oahu or Hawaii Island.

If necessary, Hawaiian Electric may implement a PSPS and proactively turn off power in other communities with high exposure to wildfire risk. Customers in PSPS areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of extended power outages. Even if high winds are not present in certain neighborhoods, a PSPS may be triggered if thresholds are exceeded on another part of the circuit. If you do not see crews in your neighborhood, they may be working elsewhere on your line.
