Man Biking While in Possession of Drugs for Sale and a Gun Sentenced to Federal Prison

A man who was stopped by police while riding his bicycle in possession of drugs and a gun in Cedar Rapids was sentenced today to more than 16 years in federal prison.

David Bryant III, age 30, from Terre Haute, Indiana, received the prison term after an April 16, 2026, guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during and in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

In a plea agreement, Bryant admitted he was riding his bicycle in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when officers tried to stop him. Bryant refused to stop and officers had to tackle him. Bryant had more than 50 grams of pure methamphetamine, a handgun, a scale, and $1,044 cash. Bryant admitted that he intended to distribute the methamphetamine to another person or persons. He also admitted that he possessed the gun in furtherance of his drug crime and that he was using it to protect himself, the drugs, and the cash.

Bryant was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. Bryant was sentenced to total of 202 months' imprisonment. He must also serve a five-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.

Bryant is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force. The task force is composed of representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
