Press Release: 26-0001

Thane Road Closure, noon, Friday, Jan. 9, 2026

(JUNEAU, Alaska) - UPDATED JAN. 8, 2026, 3:30pm

Thane Road will be closed at the avalanche gates Friday, Jan. 9, 2026 at 12 p.m. (noon) due to high avalanche hazard to the roadway. This emergency closure will be re-evaluated at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10.

The avalanche hazard is expected to remain high over the next few days. If a natural avalanche reaches the roadway, it is unlikely DOT&PF will be able to safely remove the avalanche debris until the hazard can be minimized from mitigation work or once the hazard has decreased naturally.

Thane residents should be prepared for extended road closures. For more information, visit the CBJ emergency management site for details about personal and household preparedness. Personal and Household Preparedness - City and Borough of Juneau

Thane Road Notice, Jan. 7, 2026

There is potential for heavy rain and snowfall, strong winds, and warming at higher elevations over the next several days (Jan. 8 - 11, 2026). These conditions may rapidly increase avalanche hazard above Thane Road and increase the likelihood of an avalanche reaching Thane Road.

DOT&PF reminds all travelers to obey posted warning signs. Do not stop or park in the avalanche zone. If Thane Road is blocked by avalanche debris, it is unlikely DOT&PF will be able to safely clear the road until conditions allow mitigation work or the hazard decreases naturally.

Thane residents should be prepared for the possibility of extended road closures. For personal and household preparedness information, visit the CBJ Emergency Management website.

DOT&PF is monitoring conditions closely and will provide updates as needed.
Updates will be posted on the 511 system: 511.alaska.gov
