Richard Godfrey, leadership development training manager at NSWC Panama City Division, says the heart of his work boils down to one thing: investing in the people who support the warfighter.
"I enjoy working in human resources because of the immense assets we provide to our Warfare Center and beyond," Godfrey said. "We directly impact the attracting, development and retention of a capable workforce by providing training opportunities to help our personnel fulfill NSWC PCD mission needs."
He joined the command in 2016 and has been involved in NSWC Panama City Division's leadership training program for the past three years. In his current role as a workforce development professional, he is responsible for sourcing and delivering on-site training classes and developmental courses designed to empower the organization's workforce.
"We are committed to helping NSWC PCD achieve its mission within the coastal domain for today, tomorrow and the Navy after next," Godfrey said. "We can do that by caring for our people and helping them develop to do their jobs well."
That happens through programs like the command's Leadership Development Cohorts; Godfrey said seeing employees complete the program and receive their completion certificates is a source of immense pride. Since 2021, approximately 180 employees have participated in this initiative to develop more impactful leaders.
Godfrey's dedication and attention to detail should come as no surprise. He served eight years in the U.S. Army as a personnel administration specialist. Prior to his arrival in Panama City, he served as a certified pharmacy technician with the 325th Medical Group, Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, where he accrued 28 years of federal service and was selected as Civilian of the Year twice.
Godfrey's current role underscores the importance of investing in people, as a thriving workforce is the cornerstone of a successful organization.
"NSWC PCD is one of the best places to work in the federal government because we are committed to caring about our people and providing the opportunity for them to learn and grow personally and professionally," Godfrey said. "This investment creates a positive and productive work environment, attracting and retaining top talent to support the warfighter."
