Rhode Island Energy to donate over 540 volunteer hours to local organizations through annual 'Day of Caring'

PROVIDENCE, RI (September 17, 2026) - Through Rhode Island Energy's (RIE) annual "Day of Caring," employee volunteers will lend a helping hand at 17 vital community organizations across the state, donating over 540 volunteer hours and working to make a positive impact in the communities where they live and work.

Continuing its commitment to supporting customers and communities across the Ocean State, RIE will be holding its annual Day of Caring on Thursday, September 17, with a handful of volunteer events also taking place the following Friday and Saturday. Local volunteer initiatives range from stocking food pantries, painting classrooms, garden clean-up and more.

Compared to last year's Day of Caring, volunteer efforts at RIE have increased nearly 68% year over year, growing from 322 volunteer hours served in 2025 to over 540 volunteer hours scheduled in 2026. This year, RIE employees will donate over 1,000 total volunteer hours to local organizations across the Ocean State.

RIE team members will take part in the following volunteer activities:

• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island: Unloading donated items and moving them into the warehouse.
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Rhode Island: Painting walls in the teen center.
• Rhode Island Community Food Bank: Packing boxes with nonperishable food.
• Crossroads Rhode Island: Preparing food for meals served at the women's shelter.
• Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council: Painting a shed used for recycling workshops.
• Northern Rhode Island Food Pantry: Packing food baskets for distribution.
• Good Neighbors Food Pantry: Weeding the community garden and making bouquets for clients.
• Artist's Exchange and Gateways to Change: Painting classrooms and an outdoor fence at a facility serving people with disabilities.
• Meals on Wheels Rhode Island: Participating remotely to accommodate volunteers with mobility issues, creating cards for meal-delivery recipients.
• Connecting for Children and Families: Stocking the food pantry and accepting deliveries from a truck.
• WARM Center: Painting a lunchroom mural, packing lunches, and helping in the garden.
• MLK Jr. Community Center: Stocking and sorting items in the onsite food pantry.
• East Bay Food Pantry and Thrift Shop: Touring the renovated food pantry and organizing donations in the thrift shop.
• FeedRI's Mission ImPASTAble: Competing in teams to scoop pasta into one-pound bags for donation.
• Project Weber/RENEW: Building supply kits for unhoused neighbors.
• Save The Bay at Oakland Beach: Removing trash from the shoreline using provided gloves and litter pickers.
• Franklin Farm: Harvesting vegetables to be donated to the Northern Rhode Island Food Pantry.
