ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Novant Health is expanding access to breast cancer screenings in western North Carolina with a new mobile mammography unit that will bring advanced screening services closer to where patients live and work, reducing barriers to care and supporting earlier detection.
"Regular mammograms are one of the most effective tools we have for detecting breast cancer early," said Dr. Stan Fuller, senior vice president and physician in chief for Novant Health Surgical Institute and Western North Carolina. "When screenings are easier to access, patients are more likely to take advantage of them. This mobile mammography unit helps us bring advanced screening services closer to patients while strengthening access to the broader network of women's health and cancer care services available throughout Western North Carolina."
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends routine breast cancer screenings at age 40, or earlier for women at higher risk.
The mobile unit features the latest 3-D technology, which provides highly detailed breast images that can help radiologists detect breast cancer earlier and with greater accuracy.
The launch of the mobile mammography unit reflects Novant Health's broader commitment to expanding access to care across Western North Carolina. The health system recently completed Novant Health South Asheville Medical Park, which has created a connected destination for outpatient care that includes imaging, outpatient surgery, women's care, plastic and reconstructive surgery and cancer services.
By bringing screenings directly into communities, Novant Health is helping more patients access preventive care while connecting them to specialized support and treatment services when needed.
