CDOT Announces March 27 Reopening of State Street Bridge Following Repairs

CHICAGO - The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) today announced that the State Street Bridge over the Chicago River will reopen to vehicles and pedestrians on Friday, March 27, 2026 following the completion of a rehabilitation project to repair critical structural and operational components and improve the long-term reliability of the historic bascule bridge.

The project included extensive repairs to both the bascule bridge and the State Street viaduct immediately north of the river. The scope of work included:

  • Full rehabilitation of the bridge's center locks
  • Replacement of center break that had caused damage to the roadway during periods of extreme heat
  • Improvements to the alignment between the bridge leaves
  • Rehabilitation of steel structural elements at the center of the bridge including floorbeam replacement and stringer and bracing replacement.
  • Structural repairs to the State Street viaduct north of the river
  • Viaduct sidewalk replacement as part of the structural work
