WESTFIELD, PA - Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) recently joined members of the Crary Hose Company to celebrate $250,000 in state funding awarded through the Department of Community and Economic Development's Keystone Communities Program. The funding will support critical flood recovery efforts and the construction of the company's new fire station in Tioga County.
"Immediately after last year's flood, I was on-site and saw the damage to the current Crary fire station, equipment and infrastructure," Yaw said. "Thankfully, at that critical time, neighboring communities came together to aid Westfield and to help the Crary Hose Company. A new station will go a long way in protecting the people who protect us, and I was pleased to support this significant investment."
The funding comes in response to the severe damage caused in Tioga County by Tropical Storm Debby in August 2024. The storm underscored the vulnerability of existing emergency response facilities throughout the impacted region, prompting the need for a safer, more resilient location.
The new station, which is Phase 1 of a larger project, will feature an 80-by-80-foot steel structure with drive-through truck bays, built outside the floodplain to ensure long-term protection for emergency personnel and equipment.
"The outpouring of support since the flood has been nothing short of awe-inspiring," said Chief William Goltz. "This award represents a major first step toward our goal of building a flood-safe, modern and professional fire station. We are determined to turn this horrific event into a catalyst for continued and accelerated progress for our department and community. The new station will enhance responsiveness, safety, training, health and recruitment. Thank you to Sen. Yaw and his staff for providing us with this opportunity and for their unwavering support of our department and the fire service in Pennsylvania."
