The City of Mesa Historic Preservation Office and Historic Preservation Board invite residents to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month with a free event on Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Post, 26 N. Macdonald.
Mesa Through Time - Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future is the theme of the event which celebrates Mesa's rich history and commemorates America's 250 years. The event features an awards ceremony recognizing the student winners of the City's Historic Essay and Visual Arts Contest.
Awards will be presented to the first-, second- and third-place winners in each category, honoring both students and their teachers. This year's visual arts contest also featured a group project category with one winning team selected from groups of three to six students. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. Attendees can also enjoy a backyard BBQ setting with hot dogs and hamburgers.
During National Historic Preservation Month in May, the City of Mesa Historic Preservation Office and other government agencies join with historical societies and preservation groups across the country in promoting the importance of preserving historic places.
Mesa is home to eight locally designated historic districts (neighborhoods) and more than a dozen landmarks listed on the Mesa Historic Property Register.
The City of Mesa is proud to participate in the nationwide celebration of America's 250th anniversary. Through events like Historic Preservation Month, residents are invited to join Mesa as we honor our nation's past, present and future. Mesa's America250 events will culminate in the Arizona Celebration of Freedom on July 4, 2026. Find more resources and information about the year-long series of events at mesaaz.gov/america250.
