SR 316 Bundle 1 Project Newsletter July 2026

S1

Work along the State Route (SR) 316 corridor on Bundle 1 - including SR 316 at Bethlehem Road and Barber Creek Road - continues to move forward, with crews making steady progress on roadway, bridge, and interchange improvements throughout the project area.

At the Bethlehem Road Interchange, crews continue advancing ramp construction as roadway improvements take shape throughout the area. Utility relocation work also remains ongoing, with water, power, and telecommunication lines being relocated.

At the Barber Creek Road Interchange, construction continues to progress as crews complete roadway paving and final interchange features. Bridge sidewalk construction and raised median installation remain underway, while curb and gutter installation has been completed. Paving operations along Barber Creek Road are also ongoing.

Along SR 316, inside shoulder widening has been completed in several areas, and temporary barrier walls continue to separate traffic from active construction zones. On the westbound side of SR 316, crews are continuing outside shoulder widening activities, including shoulder removal, grading, and placement of new Graded Aggregate Base (GAB).

Throughout the corridor, crews continue erosion control and maintenance activities, including maintaining silt fencing, construction exits, orange barrier fencing, and temporary mulch to protect nearby waterways and keep work areas orderly and safe. Traffic control measures remain in place to safely guide motorists through the active work zones.

S2

In the coming weeks, crews will continue advancing roadway improvements throughout the SR 316 corridor, including ongoing ramp construction and roadway preparation activities at the Bethlehem Road Interchange. At the Barber Creek Road Interchange, crews will continue constructing sidewalks and raised medians, completing paving operations, and installing additional roadway features as work progresses into the final phases of construction. Paving along SR 316 westbound is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

Across the corridor, traffic control measures and temporary barrier walls will remain in place to safely separate motorists from active construction zones while work continues.

Back-to-School Safety on SR 316

As summer winds down and students head back to school, drivers can expect heavier traffic along SR 316, especially during morning and afternoon commute times. With active construction continuing throughout the corridor, it's important to stay alert and use extra caution to help keep students, motorists, and construction crews safe.

As construction continues to make progress along the SR 316 corridor in Barrow County, thank you for helping keep our roadways safe for everyone traveling to school, work, and home.

Did you know that SR 316 is a 38.9-mile-long state highway with a history that dates back more than 60 years? The first section of the corridor opened in 1960 as a freeway connection to Lawrenceville after the city was bypassed by I-85.

As metro Atlanta continued to expand eastward in the decades that followed, travel between Atlanta and Athens became increasingly congested along routes such as US 29 and US 78, which passed through several downtown business districts. To improve travel and connectivity throughout northeast Georgia, SR 316 was constructed in phases, bypassing communities and creating a more direct regional connection.

Over the decades, Georgia DOT has continued to improve SR 316 to support the region's rapid growth, enhance safety, and improve travel efficiency throughout the corridor. Today's improvements along SR 316 continue that longstanding effort to better connect communities across northeast Georgia.
