A strong start to the 2025 season has Grand Valley ready for its next challenge: South Dakota's Black Hills State University.
The No. 3 Lakers opened the season with a 45-9 win over Lincoln University on August 30 at Lubbers Stadium. This weekend, they welcome the Yellow Jackets for the first meeting between the programs. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on September 6.
Quarterback Andrew Schuster impressed in his first career start, throwing for 251 yards and three touchdowns. The rushing attack added balance with 230 yards on the ground, led by Syone Usma-Harper's 83 yards and a touchdown. Kellen Reed paced the receiving corps with four catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
"I thought we did a pretty good job of playing clean but still being aggressive," head coach Scott Wooster said. "We've got a ton of stuff to clean up, like those five-yard penalties and execution errors when we had some big plays.
"Overall, I'm excited about who we're becoming, and probably the most exciting part is we've got a long way to go and this team can be really special."
Black Hills hopes to rebound from its season-opening loss to the University of Sioux Falls, 27-21. The Yellow Jackets are led by quarterback Luke Duby, running back Cameron Goods and receiver TJ Chukwurah.
Defensively, Black Hills is led by linemen Kellen Collier and Cooper Brown and linebacker Sebastian O'Farrell.
