Student Spotlight: Brendan Callies

Major: BA, Art History and English (Honors)
Expected Graduation: Spring 2026

Brendan Callies is a cellist currently pursuing a bachelor's in music degree from Wayne State University's Department of Music, studying with Úna O'Riordan. He has been featured as a soloist with the university orchestra and the Wind Symphony.

Callies is a member of the International Symphony, as well as a substitute in the Michigan Philharmonic, and the Lansing, Saginaw, Dearborn, Rochester, Macomb, and Albion symphonies. He has played in masterclasses for cellists Tommy Mesa, Dimtry Kouzov, and Si-Yan Darren Li.

At the Brevard Music Center, Callies has performed with Philippe Quint, as well as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and premiered pieces by Mark Contreras Weiss, and Errollyn Wallen.

Next semester, Callies looks forward to performing with his piano trio, playing his senior recital, and composing music for the Wayne State Wind Symphony and the Dance Department Capstone Showcase.
