On Thursday, September 4, 2025, the Wyandotte County Public Health Department (WyCo PHD) hosted an event honoring the winners of the 2025 Healthy Choices, Healthy Communities Art Contest.
During the event, staff from WyCo PHD and the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) presented the artists with their prizes, and event guests saw all the 13 pieces of winning artwork on display. The Grand Prize winner received a $300 Mastercard gift card, and twelve other winners each received a $100 Mastercard gift card. Prizes were sponsored by KCKPL. Terrie Garrison, WyCo PHD Interim Director, gave brief remarks honoring the winners. During her remarks, Garrison noted that this was the first year of a health department art contest, and WyCo PHD hopes to hold art contests again in the future.
WyCo PHD launched the health-themed art contest on July 1, 2025, in partnership with KCKPL and the Bonner Springs City Library, aiming to engage community members and raise awareness about health topics and essential health services. Community members had the chance to vote on their favorite artwork among 24 finalists at the August 2025 Third Friday Art Walk event. The art contest project was supported by a grant from the Network of the National Library of Medicine.*
Artwork will be featured in a 2026 WyCo PHD calendar. Winners will receive copies of the calendar, and it will be distributed through the WyCo PHD clinic and other WyCo PHD programs. The Grand Prize-winning artwork will be featured on the cover, and the other artwork will be featured for the months. A panel of health department staff helped determine which pieces of art will be featured in which months of the calendar to align with health observances and themes throughout the year (for example, featuring a mental health themed piece of art in May during Mental Health Awareness Month).
