In case you missed it, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly joined MSNBC's The Weekend today to warn that millions of Americans could soon face higher health care costs without bipartisan action from Congress. Kelly called on Republicans and President Trump to return to Washington, end the standoff, and protect Affordable Care Act tax credits that keep coverage affordable for working families.
Sen. Kelly speaks on MSNBC's The Weekend.Watch the full interview here. See key excerpts below:
On what this shutdown is really about…
"Make no mistake, this is about the price that people are going to have to pay for their health care. That's all this is about. They wanted a big tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. They got that. They're paying for it by raising premiums on hard-working people."
On the false claims about health care for undocumented immigrants…
"If you are undocumented in our country, you cannot get health care from the Affordable Care Act exchange. You are not eligible for Medicare. You are not eligible for Medicaid. They're just making that up."
On what's at stake for families…
"Look at Alaska for a second; two Republican senators there. There are individuals that have received letters where their premiums are going to go from $600 a month to $4,000 a month. That happened. In the state of Arizona, premiums on average will rise 55%. For some people, they will double. We could wind up in a situation where 109,000 people lose their health insurance […] People die when they don't have health insurance."
On what needs to happen next…
"What they need to do is have a real negotiation, and there needs to be a compromise. Maybe we don't get everything we want, but they're not going to get everything they want either. We meet somewhere in the middle and figure this out in a way that the American people again don't get screwed over."
On who he's fighting for…
"This is just a fundamental question: who are you standing with? Are we going to stand with the richest Americans so they can get their big giant tax cut, or are we going to stand with hard-working people that are about to see their premiums in many cases double and they cannot afford it?"
