STATEMENT: UK Invests in Tropical Forest Forever Facility, Boosting Momentum

LONDON (September 3, 2026) - The UK Government today announced it will make a £400 million investment in the Tropical Forest Forever Facility via a loan, a mechanism launched last year to provide long-term, predictable financing to countries that protect and sustainably manage their tropical forests. The UK has partnered with Brazil in developing the TFFF since its inception. This announcement follows previous pledges from Brazil, Indonesia, France, Germany, Norway and several philanthropic institutions.

Following is a statement from Edward Davey, Head of WRI Europe's UK Office:

"The UK's investment is an important vote of confidence in a new model for protecting the world's tropical forests. Their fate is not only vital for global biodiversity and climate stability, but also for the UK's and the world's economic resilience.

"The wildfires, heatwaves and droughts that have wreaked havoc on Europe's communities this year - and the catastrophic floods in Nepal - are profoundly intertwined with the health of the forests stretching across the Amazon, Congo Basin, Southeast Asia and beyond. If those forests fall, we all feel the impacts - through ever more severe climate-driven disasters and food insecurity. But if those forests thrive, we all feel the benefits too - through a more resilient economy and a more secure global food system.

"Much more support will be needed for the Tropical Forest Forever Facility to fulfill its promise. Now is the moment for other governments to step up - building on this renewed momentum from the UK and earlier pledges from other nations. With more investment and smart governance, this mechanism could provide countries with the long-term incentives they need to keep forests standing, while ensuring Indigenous Peoples and communities have the finance, tenure and rights to the land they have protected for generations."
