Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, had a meeting with the US Special Envoy for Ukraine, Lieutenant General (ret.) Keith Kellogg, on Tuesday, September 30th, in Warsaw.
The talks emphasized the excellent strategic cooperation between Romania and the United States of America. In this context, Minister Moșteanu expressed his appreciation for the constant and substantial support provided by Washington in strengthening the deterrence and defence posture on the Eastern Flank. He also stressed that the US commitment to Europe remains essential for maintaining stability in the face of threats generated by the Russian Federation.
A central topic of the meeting was the support provided to Ukraine, the Defence Minister reiterating Romania's determination to contribute to shaping solid security guarantees for Kiev to be implemented through close cooperation between Europe and the United States.
During the discussions on the Eastern Neighborhood, Minister Moșteanu welcomed the outcome of the recent parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova, considering it a clear confirmation of Chisinau's European orientation. He added that "Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova's stability are interdependent and directly contribute to regional security, especially in the strategic Black Sea area."
The Romanian official has also emphasized that the Black Sea must remain on the allied agenda, being an area of major interest for both NATO and the European Union.
"Strengthening the allied presence in the region through military, political and economic means, is essential for deterring any aggression. Transatlantic coordination is important for deterring Russian aggression, while support for Ukraine remains a strategic commitment of Romania, for the benefit of the security of the entire Europe," the Minister of National Defence stated.
In conclusion, both officials reconfirmed their common interest in enhancing the defence dialogue and maintaining a unified approach in supporting vulnerable partners in the Eastern Neighborhood.
