WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) joined Katie Pavlich on NewsNation to discuss ongoing operations in Iran and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.
HIGHLIGHTS:
ON THE DHS SHUTDOWN: "This is a complete disservice to the nation. The Democrats and Senator Schumer will not sit down with Senator Collins and Senator Britt, who head these committees, and I don't think there's been much conversation since the White House made some concessions. Senator Schumer is not negotiating, and some of the requests they made were things like body cameras… So okay, we'll put a requirement, and the funding in for body cameras. De-escalation training, certainly we can always use more training. They're off into this warrant's thing, which is a nonstarter, but one of their main issues last week was, 'we will not agree while Kristi Noem is heading the Department of Homeland Security'… she's not there anymore, right? And still a big fat 'no' on Thursday."
ON OPERATIONS IN IRAN: "Well, what's important to remember is the nuclear buildup is obviously-and has been-a great worry, not just to us as a nation, but to the world, because they are the greatest state sponsor of terror. But what we didn't get as much talk about initially, were all the missile launching capabilities that Iran has, and they can attack from anywhere. We are still in the process of disrupting their missiles-not just their abilities to launch, but also their ability to manufacture those missiles. I think that's going to be critical. I think I read that fifty percent were taken down. We need to get that number down because that gives them capabilities that we don't want them to have."
ON BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN IRAN: "What I'm hearing is that the president and Secretary Hegseth and General Caine and others, although General Caine is not the policymaker here, don't want to take any of their options off the table. I don't think the president wants boots on the ground in Iran. I certainly don't. The American people don't, but I don't think the president or his advisors are going to take that off the table for smart reasons. You don't tell the enemy or who you're in battle with what your next plan is."
