For the third year, Placer County Animal Services is teaming up with local elected officials to raise awareness and celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month with special adoption events and promotions.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, residents and visitors can adopt any pet from the Auburn shelter for free. Congressman Kevin Kiley and Placer County Supervisor Shanti Landon will be present to host the event, which will also feature a pet resource and safety fair, local pet-related vendors and more.
WHAT: Special free adoption event for National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
WHO: Congressman Kevin Kiley, Placer County Supervisor Shanti Landon and the staff and animals at Placer County Animal Services
WHERE: 11232 B Ave., Auburn, CA
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event will kick off National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October, and PCAS will continue with $5 discounted pet adoptions for the entire month.
"Our shelters are filled with dogs and cats who just need someone to give them a chance. I'm grateful to work with Placer County to highlight adoption and the many ways our community can help," said Congressman Kiley.
According to statistics from the California Animal Welfare Association, only 30% of households choose to adopt pets from shelter and rescues. So far, in 2025, 819 dogs, 814 cats and 166 other pets have come into the Auburn shelter. While 92.5% of them have been adopted, returned to their owners or rescued, there are still dozens of amazing dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other pets waiting for their forever homes.
"Every adoption allows us to make room for new arrivals who need care," said Katie Ingram, PCAS program manager.
Supervisor Shanti Landon added, "This event is such a special opportunity to connect families with pets who are waiting for them. Even if you can't adopt right now, fostering, volunteering, or simply spreading the word makes a big difference."
