LANSING, Mich. - Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its final environmental impact statementon the proposal to enclose the Line 5 oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac in a tunnel.
"The Army Corps' statement clearly favors Enbridge and looks to rush through a nightmare of a construction project that could devastate our most valuable freshwater resource, the Great Lakes. Based on the Corps' own findings, this tunnel project will result in lasting environmental damage, permanent wetland loss, create years of disruptive construction and desecrate tribal cultural sites. This tunnel project cannot move forward without Michigan's approval, and it's imperative Governor Whitmer step in immediately to block this project. Michiganders and folks across the Great Lakes region have implored Governor Whitmer for years to put an end to Line 5. It's past time. Protecting the safety of our water, our children, and families must be the top priority for the Whitmer Administration," said Anne Woiwode, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter Executive Committee member.
