Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, U.S. Representative Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) highlighted Southeastern Arizona's priorities during a House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee oversight hearing with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar, emphasizing the importance of border security, public safety, and legal immigration reform.
Representing a border district and serving as Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Rep. Juan Ciscomani underscored the need to maintain full operational control of the agency. The Representative has consistently opposed any attempts to weaken enforcement capabilities and is recognized as one of the most vocal advocates in Congress for fully funding DHS, modernizing ports of entry, and ensuring the department has the necessary resources to safeguard Arizonans from any threats against our homeland. This includes supporting the recovery of over 170,000 children from unvetted sponsors, many of whom have suffered unimaginable crimes, and reflects the Secretary's deeply personal commitment to tackling these issues of child trafficking head-on.
Ciscomani recognized Secretary Mullin's leadership and efforts to bring a pragmatic approach to the agency while advancing the department's core mission.
"Secretary Mullin has brought a steady and focused approach to DHS at a critical time for our nation," said Rep. Ciscomani. "After years of failed border policies from the previous administration, Secretary Mullin is restoring accountability and strengthening enforcement. For Arizonans across Congressional District 6, a secure border means safer communities, a stronger economy, lawful trade and travel. I appreciate Secretary Mullin's continued partnership in addressing the challenges uniquely impacting Southern Arizona."
"Congressman Juan Ciscomani continues to be a strong advocate in Congress for those protecting America's borders," said Hector Andujo, Local 2544 President, National Border Patrol Council. "During yesterday's hearing with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, he asked the questions that matter most to the men and women on the front lines and to the communities we serve across Arizona. Juan understands the unique challenges we face along the Southwest border, and he consistently fights to ensure that we have the resources, support, and policies necessary to keep Arizona's 6th District and our nation safe."
During the hearing, Ciscomani highlighted a key Arizona priority: modernizing the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona. Earlier this year, he sent a bipartisan letter to Secretary Mullin and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott calling for urgent action on long-overdue infrastructure improvements at the port.
The Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry, which processed more than 7 million personal vehicle passengers in 2025, was built in 1931 and last significantly updated in 1994. Its outdated infrastructure and recurring flooding create serious safety risks, operational inefficiencies, and delays in the movement of goods critical to Arizona's economy.
In the letter, Ciscomani, along with Reps. Stanton and Hamadeh called on federal officials to expedite the next phase of the project, including issuing a Notice to Proceed for the required environmental review. They emphasized that delays impact border personnel and disrupt business operations that rely on timely trade and transportation. Since sending the letter, Ciscomani's office has received a favorable response from Commissioner Rodney Scott, who acknowledged the importance of modernizing the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry and advancing efforts to combat human trafficking, protect vulnerable children, address organized cargo theft, and improve the legal immigration process.
Ciscomani continues to advocate for the modernization of this critical Port of Entry in a bipartisan manner, working with colleagues across the aisle to deliver real improvements for Southern Arizona communities and the broader cross-border economy.
