City advances new fire-paramedic station for growing Waverley West community

Winnipeg, MB - Residents of Winnipeg's Waverley West neighbourhood will soon be served by a new permanent fire-paramedic station designed to meet the needs of the area's large and growing community.

The project, which is the subject of a request for proposals released earlier today, will include a modernized station expected to be similar in style and design to the recently constructed Station 21 on Regent Avenue in Transcona.

"Winnipeg is investing in the future of our fire and paramedic service," said Mayor Scott Gillingham. "We're building new stations, buying new, locally built fire trucks and hiring more firefighters so our crews have what they need to do their jobs. This permanent station is another important investment in the rapidly growing Waverley West community."

The station is expected to support an improved response to increased area call volumes resulting from residential and commercial growth in the area.

"Strong communities depend on emergency services that are accessible, reliable and ready to respond when people need help," said Councillor Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. "A new permanent fire-paramedic station in Waverley West is an important investment in public safety, helping support residents, businesses and families in one of Winnipeg's fastest-growing areas."

"I'm pleased our modular fire paramedic station has served our community well during a rapid growth period in Waverley West," said Councillor Janice Lukes, Waverley West. "It's exciting to now see a state-of-the-art permanent station taking shape in the heart of our growing community."

The new permanent station will replace the temporary station on Eaglewood Drive that has served the community since 2024 and is expected to improve response times for the area. Once the new station is completed, the temporary station will be decommissioned and moved to another (not-yet-determined) location in the city.

"As Waverley West continues to grow, the WFPS needs to grow our emergency response services with it," said Fire and Paramedic Chief Ryan Sneath. "This new station will help us respond more quickly, support our crews and provide the reliable fire and paramedic services residents expect. It's an important investment in the safety of this community, both now and in the future."

The project will also be the first non-road infrastructure investment to use the City's recent adoption of Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC) contracts on certain projects as part of a pilot project.

CCDC contracts are nationally recognized, industry-standard agreements. They are designed to ensure clarity, simplification and fairness for all parties involved and are expected to result in increased interest in City of Winnipeg construction projects. The City previously announced three road projects as part of the pilot project.

"Adopting CCDC contracts is a practical step that benefits contractors and taxpayers alike. These contracts are the national standard for good reason - they set clear expectations, allocate risk fairly and reduce disputes and delays that can drive up costs," said Darryl Harrison, President and CEO of the Winnipeg Construction Association. "CCDC agreements bring the clarity for Manitoba's construction contractors that encourages more firms to compete for City work - which will lead to better outcomes for taxpayers. Seeing the pilot expand from roadwork to a building project like this fire-paramedic station is exactly the kind of progress our members have been looking for."
