Has GE Vernova Stock Become A Different Bet

GE Vernova (GEV) stock trades at 5.4 times sales, against 3.3 for the S&P 500. Shareholders paying that premium need to know what they are buying, and management's priorities have changed. Management made the case for a turnaround in the Wind business in January 2025. The company did not call Wind a turnaround on its latest call. So what does management talk up now instead?

GE Vernova Now Talks Up High-Voltage Grid Equipment

Management highlighted a $9 billion deal to buy Trench Group during its October 28, 2026 call, which it said will strengthen the Electrification business in high-voltage grid equipment. The company described the transaction as a vertical integration of critical components that GE Vernova needs to meet its growing backlog.

The pitch was different in January 2025. During the fiscal Q4 2024 call, management said GE Vernova had made solid progress in turning Wind around in 2024. The company cut the segment's EBITDA losses, a measure of profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, by almost half despite lower revenues. Wind mattered then. Its fiscal 2024 sales of $9.7 billion were larger than Electrification's $7.55 billion.

Wind has not dropped off the calls. Management said on the latest call that Wind reached profitability in the third quarter, with EBITDA of $72 million. The company, however, has not described Wind as a turnaround on any call since January 2025.

Electrification Outsold Wind In Fiscal 2025

Electrification sold $9.64 billion in fiscal 2025, up 27.7% from a year earlier. Wind sales fell 6.1% to $9.11 billion, so the business management now talks up has overtaken the one it used to. Neither is the company's largest: Power, home of its gas turbine business, brought in 51.9% of fiscal 2025 revenue.

Wind's decline has not ended. Revenue for the segment rose 3% in the third quarter, but management expects Wind's organic revenue to fall by a mid-single-digit percentage for 2026. That forecast is better than the low double-digit fall management expected earlier. Trench would add to the grid side. Management estimates Trench's 2026 revenue at $1.4 billion and expects it to approach $2 billion in 2028, after the deal closes in late 2027.

Is GE Vernova's New Emphasis Good News For Shareholders?

GE Vernova has become a somewhat different bet: management's pitch has moved from Wind to grid equipment. On the figures, the change reads as more reassuring than concerning. Management now emphasizes the business that is growing faster, and it expects Electrification's adjusted EBITDA margin to trend toward the higher end of its 18% to 20% range for 2026.

Wind is the concern that remains. Management expects Wind to post EBITDA losses of $400 million to $500 million for 2026, even after its third-quarter profit. The deal itself looks affordable. Management plans to pay for Trench with an equal mix of new debt and cash, and GE Vernova ended September with $16.8 billion in cash and short-term investments against $2.8 billion of debt. On the same call, management also doubled its stock buyback program from $10 billion to $20 billion.

GE Vernova is expected to report its fourth-quarter results in January 2027. Management said it will set the date of its next Capital Markets Day on the January call, and it plans to give a 2030 financial outlook, including Electrification margins, at that meeting. Wind's EBITDA for the fourth quarter is the number to watch in that report.
