Overview
On Sept. 30, 2025, the Federal government failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded. As such, a federal government shutdown is in effect.
However, the City of Long Beach wants to assure our community that basic municipal services will continue without interruption.
Impacts on Day-to-Day City Services
At this time, the Federal shutdown does not affect the day-to-day services that our residents rely on. City government remains open and operational. City operations continue, including, but not limited to:
However, the City is closely monitoring the situation, as a prolonged shutdown could begin to impact certain federally funded programs, such as housing assistance, nutrition programs and other safety net services administered in partnership with federal agencies. There may also be implications for jobs, economic activity and regional stability if the shutdown persists.
Direct Federal Essential Services
Many essential services, such as Social Security payments, Medicare and Medicaid, the U.S. Postal Service and the Veterans Administration will remain operational.
Long Beach Airport
Long Beach Airport (LGB) remains open and fully operational. While passengers should continue to expect normal travel through the Airport, we are monitoring the situation closely with our federal partners. Air traffic controllers and TSA officers are considered essential personnel and will continue reporting to work without pay in order to keep travelers safe. Early impacts to Airport operations will be minimal. However, if the shutdown continues for an extended period, passengers may begin to notice longer wait times or minor delays. Travelers are encouraged to check their flight status directly with their airline before arriving at the Airport.
Urging Congress to Resolve This Critical Matter
The City strongly urges federal leaders in the months ahead to adopt a continuing resolution or federal budget that restores the full operation of the federal government, protects essential services and ensures stability.
Community members can make their voices heard, too. Contact Your Federal Representatives and encourage them to come to an agreement and pass a Federal spending budget as soon as possible. You can find your representatives at:
In the interim, the City will continue to do everything we can to provide uninterrupted service to our community.
