The City of West Sacramento accepted a $20,000 check Wednesday, July 22, from West Sac Play to improve Lennie and Kitty Triboli Park. For more than 50 years, longtime residents Lennie and Kitty cared for the then vacant parcel at 1028 Fernwood Street and transformed it into a beautiful gathering space. They planted grass and trees, hand-watered the landscape, mowed the lawn, and pruned the trees-all without ownership of the property. Once put up for sale, the City purchased the 8,146-square-foot neighborhood pocket park, named it after the Tribolis, and has since had power and irrigation infrastructure installed, with additional improvements in the works.
"We are grateful to West Sac Play for their continued investment in our parks," said Parks & Recreation Director Kate Smith. "It's vital we create and maintain inviting and fun spaces for anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors."
West Sac Play, a nonprofit dedicated to improving outdoor play spaces throughout West Sacramento, has been actively fundraising for Triboli Park for the past year. Originally formed as Bridgeway Play by a group of parents advocating for better playground equipment at Bridgeway Lakes Community Park, the organization has grown into a community partner that has raised more than $100,000 over the past decade to support shade structures, hydration stations, playground improvements, and other park enhancements across the city.
"The City of West Sacramento is so good at collecting grants and securing funds to improve parks," said West Sac Play member Jaclyn Powell at the check presentation. "Us at West Sac Play are thrilled to supplement those funds and improve these smaller parks that may not get much attention just due to funding limitations."
Parks & Recreation is actively conducting community outreach to learn what improvements residents want in the park. Future amenities could include benches, pathways, landscaping enhancements, and other features designed to create a more inviting neighborhood destination.
