Downtown hydrant flushing begins July 7

Fire hydrants in the Downtown Iowa City area will undergo flushing and maintenance from 11 p.m. Thursday, June 18, until 7 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2026. This work is done as part of the Water Division's annual maintenance program.

The flushing activities will occur at various locations and will have minimal impact on the normal flow of traffic for motorists and pedestrians.

Businesses, homeowners, and tenants in the Downtown area are reminded that if rusty-colored water comes from their taps during this time, they should run their water until it clears. They may also want to avoid doing laundry while flushing is underway to avoid any discoloration.
