Hertfordshire firefighters to take part in New York memorial run honouring 9/11 heroes

Published: 17 Sep 2026

Two firefighters from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will travel to New York this month to take part in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk, a moving annual event that honours the firefighters, police officers, emergency workers and civilians who lost their lives in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Firefighters Mark Burgess and Lee Campbell will join colleagues from across the global firefighting community in a powerful act of remembrance and solidarity. They are raising money for The Firefighters Charity.

The event commemorates the journey made by New York firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers after hearing of the attacks on 11 September 2001. Today, thousands of people from around the world take part to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to celebrate the courage of emergency responders.

Mark and Lee will complete the 5K route alongside current and retired first responders, military personnel and members of the public, helping to keep alive the memory of those affected by one of the most significant events in modern history.

Watch Commander and Lead Instructor Mark 'Budge' Burgess from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Taking part in the Tunnel to Towers run is a huge honour. As firefighters, we share a bond with colleagues around the world, and this event is an opportunity to pay our respects to those who lost their lives while serving others. We are proud to represent Hertfordshire and stand alongside thousands of people remembering the bravery and sacrifice shown on 9/11."

Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire Alex Woodman said: "The events of 11 September 2001 had a profound impact on the global emergency services community. We are incredibly proud of Mark and Lee for taking part in this special memorial event and representing Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service on the international stage. Their participation reflects the values of service, courage and dedication that unite firefighters everywhere."

The Tunnel to Towers 5K takes place in New York each year close to the anniversary of the attacks and attracts participants from across the globe.
