SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Registration for Shepherd University's fall Lifelong Learning program opens Monday, August 3, at 9 a.m. The program offers adult learners academic, cultural, and social opportunities through a selection of courses, lectures, interest groups, creative programs, and travel experiences.

Guided by the motto "Be Curious. Stay Informed. Have Fun.," Lifelong Learning is designed for adults who want to continue learning, meet new people, and explore new interests in a welcoming, noncredit setting. The fall course lineup spans topics ranging from Bruce Stringsteens' influence and Indonesia's rising power to artificial intelligence and navigating Medicare. Additional subjects include deep dives into specific topics related to local and world history, philosophy, religion, literature, the arts, current events, and personal enrichment.

Most courses are 90 minutes, meet once per week for six weeks, and are taught by volunteer instructors from the University and surrounding community.

"People may join Lifelong Learning because a particular course catches their attention, but they return because of the community they find here," said Cindy Powers, director of continuing education and the Lifelong Learning program at Shepherd University. "Our participants bring a lifetime of experiences and perspectives to every class and conversation, making the program just as rewarding socially as it is intellectually."

Courses are only one part of the Lifelong Learning experience. Lifelong Learning also offers:

  • Spark! Lecture Series: daytime lectures twice per week
  • President's Lecture Series: evening programs for the campus and surrounding community
  • Lectures and Libations: faculty-led discussions in relaxed, community settings
  • Community Conversations: weekly online discussions designed to foster an informed and connected community
  • Interest Groups: gatherings around shared interests
  • FASTEnER Open Lab: dedicated space for self-directed projects in areas like casting, digital fabrication, woodworking, and metalworking
  • Tours and Travel: day trips and national and international tours
  • Special Programs: a three-day writer's retreat and other unique opportunities.

Participants can register for individual courses, which are generally $79 each, or individual lectures for $15. A $195 semester subscription includes unlimited courses and lectures as well as a campus parking pass. Day trips, tours, and special offerings are priced separately.

Scholarships are available for individuals who would otherwise be unable to participate.

Classes and lectures begin September 14. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register early.
