A Semester Abroad in New Zealand Teaches Lessons Beyond the Classroom

Being from Minnesota means Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) junior Reva Jenson is no stranger to winter. However, encountering it between June and August was a new experience during her semester in New Zealand through the Rinker Center for Experiential Learning. A whole hemisphere and over 8,000 miles away from her fellow Sailfish in South Florida, Reva is making the most of her time studying abroad-and seeing the vibrant landscapes and cultures of the South West Pacific.

Jenson spends her weekdays in her host city of Dunedin, strolling streets lined with Scottish-inspired architecture from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. She attends classes that count toward her major in public relations at the University of Otago, the country's oldest higher education institution, founded in 1869. Volcanic formations, steep hills, and every variation of shoreline from rocky cliffs to sparkling white sandy beaches surround the city.

It was this kind of natural beauty that first attracted Jenson to the idea of studying in New Zealand. To her, the country seemed like a far, untamed, and almost hidden part of the world; a perfect place for an adventurous spirit. Her favorite place she has visited so far is Milford Sound, a fjord known for its massive waterfalls-some over 500 feet tall-that plummet out of the lush rainforest and into the sea.

"My first impression of my location was that it is beautiful," Jenson recalls. "The nature is so insane; having mountains, wild sheep, beautiful beaches, and strong culture. There's also amazing food."

Along with the stunning landscapes, Jenson has been experiencing the Indigenous Polynesian population of New Zealand's Māori people. One of the culture shocks Jenson had when she arrived in New Zealand was the use of the Te reo Māori language on buildings and in street names. Her study abroad program even hosted a Haka lesson, where she was able to wear Māori clothing and learn the traditional dance that symbolizes strength, unity, and pride.

While Jenson is immensely enjoying her time abroad, she has faced some challenges, including adapting to a different school system and being so far away from friends and family. These challenges have ultimately led Jenson to be more reflective in her spiritual life. A verse she's leaned on during her time abroad is Joshua 1:9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

"My time abroad has shaped my worldview through exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and also new ways of living," Jenson shares. "I find myself relying on God a lot due to me being outside my comfort zone, helping me grow in my faith."
