As the world turns its attention to THE PLAYERS Championship this weekend, one University of North Florida alum has built a career behind the scenes in professional golf.
Jacksonville native Danielle Young ('15) first enrolled at UNF with plans to pursue nursing. When her academic path shifted, she began taking sport management classes while preparing for her next steps. That's when she discovered a new passion that would shape her career.
Through mentorship from Silverfield College of Education and Human Services faculty like Dr. Kristi Sweeney and Dr. Jason Lee, Young discovered a passion for the sports industry. Encouraged to build connections and prepare for a career in the field, she decided to switch her major to sport management.
"My graduating class was remarkably close-knit," Young said. "I still stay in touch with several classmates to this day."
During her junior year, Young secured an internship with the PGA TOUR in the ticketing department. The opportunity quickly led to a full-time administrative role supporting the executive director of THE PLAYERS Championship. After several years, she transitioned to the organization's sponsor relations team, steadily advancing her career.
Earlier this month, after more than a decade with the PGA TOUR, Young was promoted to director of sponsor relations.
In her current role, Young manages a portfolio of official marketing partners for the PGA TOUR. Her responsibilities include daily communication with partners, long-term strategic planning and cultivating relationships with major brands across the golf industry.
Working with the people around her is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
"I'm fortunate to work with incredible people who encourage me, challenge me and help me grow," Young said.
Outside of work, Young and her husband are raising two young boys. Whether spending time together at the beach or relaxing at home, she says those moments with family are the ones she treasures most.
For current students and young alumni hoping to enter the sports industry, Young offers simple but practical advice: network with intention.
"Once you identify an organization that aligns with your values and career goals, work hard to get your foot in the door," she said.
