Denver - Monday, August 31, 2026 - Today, the Denver Police Department announces the arrest of Lino Sandoval, DOB August 22, 2003, for the homicide that occurred near West 17th Avenue and North Federal Boulevard. On Friday, August 21, 2026, at approximately 11:31 p.m., Denver 911 received a call regarding a shooting in the area of West 17th Avenue and North Federal Boulevard. The caller told the dispatcher that a suspect was chasing and shooting at them while they were driving.
The 17-year-old victim, a passenger inside the victim vehicle, suffered a gunshot wound. The driver then transported the victim to a hospital in Lakewood. The victim was later transported to a Denver hospital, where on August 25, he died from his injuries.
The case was initially believed to be the Lakewood Police Department's case, but during the investigation, Lakewood Police investigators uncovered that the shooting occurred in Denver, not Lakewood. Therefore, Denver Police investigators took over this case on August 24.
Further video evidence located by Denver Police FAST and Homicide investigators showed the suspect vehicle, described as a white SUV, following the victim vehicle near East 6th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard. Investigators identified Sandoval as the driver of the white SUV and alleged shooting suspect, and took him into custody on August 28. Sandoval is being held for investigation of First Degree Murder.
The Denver District Attorney's Office will make the final determination regarding charges.
