"The accreditation is a testament to the hard work of County staff in its dedication to environmental stewardship," said Chair Doug Chaffee. "Orange County continues to lead the way in improving visitor's travel experiences and meeting our sustainability goals for a cleaner future."
Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally endorsed, global carbon management certification program tailored specifically for airports. The program independently evaluates and recognizes airports' efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions through a structured, seven-level framework that progresses from carbon footprint measurement to carbon neutrality.
"John Wayne Airport continues setting the standard for excellence in aviation. Earning Level 2 Carbon Accreditation highlights Orange County's leadership in cutting emissions through smart planning and innovation, as well as responsible operations that protect our environment and improve the travel experience," said Vice Chair Katrina Foley. "This achievement reflects the Airport and County's shared commitment to climate sustainability, innovation, and improved transportation."
Level 2 Carbon Accreditation recognizes airports that have successfully measured their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and implemented effective carbon reduction strategies over a rolling three-year period. To earn this certification, JWA assessed its emissions from 2021 through 2023 and demonstrated a consistent decline in carbon output driven by targeted operational initiatives. These reductions were validated by an independent auditor, confirming the accuracy and integrity of the Airport's reporting.
This achievement was recognized by the Orange County Board of Supervisors through a formal resolution commending JWA for its leadership in environmental stewardship, its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and its contributions to advancing countywide sustainability priorities.
"Receiving this accreditation is about much more than simply reaching an environmental milestone," said Second District Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento. "It is a recognition of how important it is for our residents that we reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and a testament of our county's ongoing commitment to the development of a more sustainable airport."
"I am pleased to hear that John Wayne Airport is continuing to be recognized for its commitment to being a world-class airport," said Supervisor Wagner. "This Level 2 Carbon Accreditation Achievement Award is yet another milestone in Orange County's commitment to clean air and top-tier customer service."
JWA's Level 2 Carbon Accreditation positions the Airport among a select group of North American airports progressing toward global standards in carbon management. The certification underscores JWA's commitment to building a more sustainable future while maintaining the safety, efficiency, and quality service that travelers expect.
"John Wayne Airport is proud to advance its sustainability practices and support the County of Orange's environmental goals," said Charlene Reynolds, Airport Director. "Achieving Level 2 Carbon Accreditation reflects our team's dedication to responsible operations, innovation, and delivering a world-class travel experience for Orange County travelers."
