Zion Romero is one of the first cohorts of students with the opportunity to minor in public service through the University of New Mexico's School of Public Administration (SPA), and it allowed her the opportunity to attend a summer program to strengthen her knowledge.
The Summer Policy Academy took place in Washington, D.C. for one week and in Seattle for two weeks. They learned about public services and public policy through workshop sessions and panel discussions. They heard from national leaders and local government officials.
Kate Cartwright, Ph.D., is the director and associate professor of SPA. She said Romero's participation in the Summer Policy Academy allowed her to engage with policy issues hands-on, connect with peers nationwide, and develop skills that will serve her well beyond graduation.
"Pursuing a career in public service at this moment means stepping into a time of both deep challenges and extraordinary opportunity, where thoughtful, ethical leadership can help build trust, strengthen communities, and shape a more just and effective government," said Cartwright.
Romero said she was impressed with the experts she heard from, and the networking opportunities provided through the Summer Policy Academy. "It's a great opportunity to do some brainstorming with peers," Romero said. "The program happens every summer, and I encourage students to apply because it's fully paid for and that's one less thing to worry about."
Cartwright said these programs bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. "Students like Zion Romero remind us why public service matters," Cartwright said. "She has embraced every opportunity to learn, connect, and lead. We are proud of Zion and the way she represented UNM and the School of Public Administration on a national stage."
Romero was a student ambassador for three semesters with the School of Public Administration, working with students from different colleges around the country as well as the program at UNM to put on national events as well as helping the SPA.
Launched in the fall of 2023, the minor is not only the first at UNM, but the only of its kind in the state. It was created in collaboration with The Volcker Alliance and its Next Generation Service Corps for any student of any major to gain values, knowledge, and skills to pursue a career in government, nonprofits, or tribal governance.
