HSR Investigator Named Fulbright Scholar

Barbara Jones, MD, MS

Barbara Jones, MD, MS-a core investigator at HSR's Informatics, Decision-Enhancement, and Analytic Sciences Center of Innovation (IDEAS)-has received a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Award in Medical Sciences to study the use of telehealth and digital health technologies in Australia, where she will measure and support long-term recovery in pneumonia, with a focus on supporting patients in rural communities. Her objectives include: 1) identifying the uses of telehealth in clinical care for pneumonia across Australia, and 2) developing research methods and care models that use data from telehealth technologies to measure mobility and other important patient outcomes. Her project will complement and inform her existing work at VA, which leverages clinical data, technology, and the learning healthcare system to improve pneumonia outcomes for Veterans.

Dr. Jones is a pulmonary and critical care physician and clinician scientist at VA Salt Lake City Healthcare System, with a research interest in leveraging informatics to understand and improve pneumonia care. A former HSR Career Development Awardee, Dr. Jones currently has a VA Merit award to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pneumonia care. She also has several roles in clinical leadership across VA and beyond, including as a field advisor to the VHA National Program Director in Pulmonary & Critical Care, and leading the ATS 2025 Clinical Practice Guidelines for community-acquired pneumonia.
