The University of Toledo's Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership will host a host a lecture on taboo topics in higher education on Thursday, Nov. 13.
Dr. Nasser Hussain of New College of Florida will present "American Taboos: Teaching the Unspeakable in Higher Education" at noon in the Law Center Room 1013.
Dr. Nasser Hussain is an assistant professor of anthropology at New College of Florida.
To register for the free, public event, go to the institute's website.
Hussain is an assistant professor of anthropology at New College of Florida, where he also directs the Civil Discourse Initiative and is the founder and head of the Culture and Politics Lab. He previously served as the associate director of civic life and thought at Duke University and as a lecturer in politics at Princeton University.
In "American Taboos," he will explore topics that are widely treated as untouchable in the United States, including what is lost when instructors avoid them in higher education classrooms.
"Universities thrive when we foster thoughtful conversations about complex and even controversial topics," said Dr. Jonathan Culp, director of the Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership. "There's simply no other way to prepare students for the responsibilities of citizenship and leadership in a pluralistic society."
The Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership is a multidisciplinary center at UToledo that was created and funded by the Ohio Legislature in 2023. Through teaching, research and public programming, the institute provides a space for diverse voices to discuss and debate key questions about U.S. society, history and politics.
Free visitor parking for the lecture is available in Area 12W.
All other visitor parking requires payment through the ParkMobile app, a parking meter or a daily permit via ParkUToledo. Visit the ParkUToledo website for more information.
